Thesis Work - Dummy Positioning and Seat Belt Routing for Crash Analysis hos Volvo Cars

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
In car development Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) crash analysis, several different markets with varying legal and consumer information test protocols are analyzed. Due to variations in protocols, many crash test dummy positions are needed as well as varying seat belt routings. Even though advanced pre-processing softwares are available to assist in this process, it can be labor intensive.

The quality and repeatability of dummy positioning and seat belt routing operations could be improved by a more structured, and ideally automated or semi-automated process based on vehicle specific constraints such as the seat position, floor height and hand placement prior to crash.

Scope
The aim of this thesis is to create a method which allows for several different dummy variants of varying occupant sizes to be automatically positioned into a predefined seat position. The method should include positioning both the legs and the arms to their final positions and check for contact penetrations to its surroundings while doing this. After doing this an output should be created explaining generic measurements and show how the dummy have been positioned. This shall be created together with the data required to launch a pre-simulated to find the initial position of the compressed foam as well as the belts routing around the occupant.

Task Description

  •     Review the scientific literature for occupant positioning methods used (such as the UMTRI-method, legal procedures and consumer rating procedures).
  •     Learn to carry out occupant positioning simulations according to existing guidelines.
  •     Create a method or script that will position different dummies based on vehicle input for different load cases that can be used as input to the pre-simulation done in LS-DYNA
  •     Review the final position and standardize different measurements that can be used to compare the difference between different vehicles
  •     Compare the resulting positioning script with respect to dummy positions in test data.
  •     Expand the method to Human Body Model (HBM) positioning.

You contribution is our future
The project is suitable for two MSc students within Applied Mechanics, Automotive Engineering or similar, preferably with good knowledge and interest in the FE method, impact biomechanics, and scripting. The thesis work will be done in our offices at Volvo Cars Safety Centre in Göteborg, Sweden.

Duration

  •     The work will start in January 2023
  •     The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  •     30 ECTS (Master academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  •     This thesis is to be conducted by two students working in pair.
