The Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG) of John Deere in Kaiserslautern develops future trends and technologies in the area of mobile agricultural and construction machinery in cooperation with different research centers. In addition, ISG develops and sells products and services in the area of precision farming using global satellite-based navigation systems (GNSS), automated steering systems, machine automation, sensor technologies, telematic system solutions, web applications as well as apps for mobile devices to optimize farming processes and to support decision making.
Our department Region 2 Small Grain Production System is looking for an

PhD Student – Precision Crop Protection (m/w/d)

part-time with 31,5 h/week

Your Area of Responsibility:


  • Execution of a PhD thesis in the area of precision crop protection

  • Evaluating agronomic, ecological and economic impact of Production System innovations

  • Investigating megatrends, market drivers, challenges and future needs in agricultural production systems and value chains industry market scans

  • Supporting of the Small Grains Production System team in precision crop protection topics and other subject areas

  • Internal and external knowledge sharing

What Skills You Need:


  • Finalized Master studies in agriculture, crop production, agricultural engineering or similar fields of study

  • Profound understanding and practical experiences in agricultural Production Systems (with strong focus on crop protection in arable farming)

  • Understanding of precision agriculture and associated value drivers

  • Knowledge in statistical methods (evaluation of field tests & market data analyses)

  • Advanced experiences in MS Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint) and statistical tools (RStudio, SPSS)

  • Presentation skills to report out results in front of a bigger group

  • Fluent English and German language capabilities other language skills are beneficial

Key Topic Areas/ Research Scope:


  • Identification and evaluation future use cases with sensor-based crop- and pest detection across production steps (biomass sensing, disease scouting, stand count, ….)

  • Evaluation and further developing of agronomic optimization strategies enabled by sensor- and knowledge-based crop protection (value and amount of pre-scouting required, spraying routines and product selection, threshold concepts, data feedback loops – weed maps)

  • Support methodology development and execution of field studies to prove and validate agronomic value of different sensor-based crop protection approaches in the field

This tariff position is limited to 3 years, based in Kaiserslautern and vacant immediately.
