Internship: Tolerances’ Calculation Tool Development or Design Principles for Plastic Structures (Suitable for Thesis) hos Philips

Start date: We prefer students able to start as soon as possible, no later than Q2 2021

Duration: 6-9 months

Depending on the subject of your thesis, we will be able to support with a thesis assignment. If we do support this, we require you to work 32 hours per week on the responsibilities, and allow you to work 8 hours per week on your thesis. In case we are not able to support you with a thesis research, we require 40 hours per week availability.

We provide two different assignments:

1. Tolerances' Calculation tool Development

2. Design Principles for Plastic Structures

In this role, you have the opportunity to

Have an impact on the way of working in our Philips Center of Excellence in Best while interacting with the most knowledgeable key stakeholders in the Magnetic Resonance (MR) domain.

You are responsible for

Assignment 1:
  • Defining the need of an analytical approach towards (1D, 2D, 3D) tolerances’ calculations in the development community.
  • Identifying the current gaps within the existing way of working and the development needs.
  • Proposing, designing and evaluating concepts.
  • Creating and implementing the most suitable concept in the shape of a tool available for all the engineering community in Philips.

Assignment 2:

  • Defining the need of establishing a formal design principles’ process for plastic structures across the development community.
  • Identifying the current technologies and materials in use and the common and most appropriate used constructions in plastic structures (alignment, reinforcement, snapping and other features).
  • Setting the analytical rules for the identified construction principles considering the boundaries defined by the identified technologies, materials and the MR domain.
  • Creating and implementing a Design Principles for Plastic Structures handbook accessible for the entire engineering community.
  • Creating the relevant tools for the calculation of the identified as common and most used constructions in plastic.

You are a part of

The Patient Centric Sub Systems’ Center of Excellence team, which belongs to the MR R&D organization and focuses on the development of an extensive group of components, such as those related to Accessories, Patient Handling, Patient Environment and Observation, Patient Communication, Infrastructure & Cooling and Biometric Sensing domains. You will work also outside of our team closely in a cross-functional team with experts from Clinical Applications, Marketing and Experience Design.
You will be working at our facility in Best (nearby Eindhoven).
Due to the current COVID19 situation, the management will follow the Philips guidelines in which they will inform you whether you will need to work from home or need to be present in Best.
To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience
  • Currently studying towards your Master in Sciences degree in: Mechanical Engineering
  • Good English (verbal and written) communication skills
  • Hands-on, pragmatic mindset (‘can do’), result oriented
  • A sharp mind and an adaptive learning mindset
  • Can work well both individually and as part of a team
  • Structured approach and strong analytical skills

Additional profile requirements per assignment

Assignment 1
  • Affinity with vector analysis, statistical and mechanical calculations
  • Preferably, experience with six-sigma.

Assignment 2

  • Affinity with mechanical calculations
  • Affinity with polymers and materials in general. - Knowledge of polymeric manufacturing techniques is preferred
