Master Thesis – Automatic detection of unusual behavior using camera metadata at Axis Communications

Background

During the last years, there has been rapid development in the field of advanced image analytics done directly onboard surveillance cameras. Moving objects can now be identified, tracked, classified, and given properties like speed and color.

The metadata produced by these systems are often used to trigger live alarms to get the attention of the operator of the surveillance system. However, configuring the rules for when to trigger alarms is a tedious task that often requires many iterations of fine-tuning in order to reduce the number of false alarms.

This thesis project aims to find ways to automate the configuration of alarm rules, by instead allowing the system to autonomically “learn” the scene. When the system knows the normal behaviors of the scene it can produce alarms only when “unusual behavior” is detected, e.g. “car moving in the wrong direction”.

The team you will be working with is specialized in integrations for big Video Management Systems and will provide a good platform for creating prototypes. C#/.Net/Windows is the main language/platform used, but you are free to make prototypes in other environments like Matlab as well.

Goal

Find a model for how we can describe a fixed video scene with moving objects using metadata information in such a way that we can automatically detect “unusual behavior”.

  • Implement a prototype

  • Do field tests

  • Optionally, provide ways to optimize the model, e.g. operator can indicate which alarms are desired and not.

OK, I am interested! What do I do now?
